In the early morning hours of November 27, 2021, Mark Cavendish and his wife, Peta were awoken by a noise in their home. They had both been asleep with one of their young children when what they thought was a nightmare turned out to be all too real.

According to court testimony heard this week, three masked intruders suddenly burst into the couple’s bedroom that night, assaulted Cavendish, then threatened to stab him with a large knife in front of his family. Peta hid their three-year-old son under the duvet.

The robber’s demands? According to the prosecutor, a collection of high-end watches was they were after, and apparently nothing else. Two watches were stolen during the incident that were together valued at over $833,000.

As the robbers were fleeing the scene, a careless error in what was otherwise a sophisticated and intricately planned hit led to the apprehension of one of the perpetrators: he dropped his cell phone. Al Sesay, 28, of East London was connected to the phone by authorities using DNA evidence and a forensic examination of the phone’s contents. Sesay has pleaded guilty to the robbery.

The trial of two other accused accomplices, Romario Henry, 31, and Oludewa Okorosobo, 28, both of London, began on Tuesday and is expected to conclude in about two weeks. Both men deny any wrongdoing. According to the Times, two other alleged intruders have yet to be located.
