Tri-tip sandwich at Harris BBQ

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — At some convenience stores, food options are limited to a bag of chips and a hot dog that’s been sitting out for who knows how long and about which it’s best not to think.

But the Sully’s convenience store on Coffee Road between Truxtun Avenue and Stockdale Highway offers a veritable bounty of appetizing food.

They’re stocked with cookies and doughnuts from Smith’s Bakery. A display is crammed with sandwiches, salads and desserts from Sequoia Sandwich Company.

Most recently, Harris BBQ opened inside the store. Now you can place an order for ribs, brisket or pulled pork while purchasing gas and grabbing snacks for home.

On Saturday I had the tri-tip sandwich — smoked tri-tip, slightly peppery, on a plain roll. I added spicy barbecue sauce. That added some zing, but in hindsight I bet it would have been even better also topped with the slightly creamy coleslaw I got on the side. I like a lot going on in my sandwiches.

My dining companion got the brisket and cheddar sandwich — it looked great. The “mains” portion of the menu offers the following: tri-tip, brisket, burnt ends, chicken or pork ribs.

If you’re dead set on getting a hot dog, Harris BBQ serves that too, a half-pound all-beef one. The convenience store special of a hot dog and chips lives on.
