But it seems those tried-and-true hues are falling into a new category: the one that more and more people are beginning to ignore. According to a new report from Houzz, homeowners today are finding their kitchen bliss in dark, moody shades—think navy, forest green, and even black.
But before you avert your beach-loving eyes, you might want to hear this trend out. Darker shades certainly add more drama to a space, but when paired with crisp whites and loads of natural light, they set just the sort of comfy tone you’d want in your beach home.

One could even argue that, compared to brights and whites, they’re perhaps easier to pull off. In an all-white space, for instance, finding punctuation through varying textures and materials can be a challenge. With color, choosing a shade that feels like an accent, yet is still cohesive with the rest of the home, is your obstacle.

Moody shades, on the other hand, are essentially bolder riffs on classic neutrals. With cabinetry painted a deep midnight blue or a gray bordering on slate, you add just the right amount of interest to a space while maintaining that easy, breezy, beachy feel.
