Ficus Shivereana

According to Paris Lalicata, The Sill's plant expert, the Ficus shivereana has been having a moment in the last months of 2023. This will only continue into 2024. “It sports beautiful, variegated foliage that is unlike any other Ficus species we've seen. Plant enthusiasts or even rare plant collectors will be sure to get their hands on this plant.”

Aspidistra Elatior (Cast-Iron Plant)

Lalicata tells me cast iron plants are coming in hotter than ever. “We think this underrated, low-maintenance plant will make its overdue appearance in the spotlight for 2024. A lot of plant parents are always looking for low-maintenance plants to adorn their homes and this plant fits the bill. There are also variegated versions of this plant for those who love a little pop.”

Dracaena Trifasciata (Snake Plant)

Several years ago, snake pants slithered their way onto the scene and they haven’t left ever since. Lalicata predicts they’re here to stay for the long run. “Snake plants have always been a staple in every plant parent's collection and in offices. With the ever-growing amount of varieties and cultivars emerging, we predict a rise in snake plant interest in the new year due to their diversity of striking foliage,” she explains.

Succulent Arrangements

Plants that don’t require a lot of watering and can be part of a desert landscape have prevailed in the past few years, especially due to rising water costs and shortages. Lalicata believes succulent arrangements will be big in 2024. “Their unique and diverse shapes, colors, and textures make them versatile for creative arrangements, contributing to their popularity year after year.”

Fruit Trees

Why have farm-to-table when you can have yard-to-table? Fruit trees, especially those of the citrus variety, are aesthetic and convenient. Lalicata thinks this is partially due to olive trees becoming the it plant in 2023. “The growing interest in gardening and sustainable living has led people to explore cultivating these manageable and fruitful trees within the confines of their homes, normally with the help of grow lights,” she explains.

Plants With Unique Leaf Shapes

Kaylyn Hewitt, lead floral designer at The Bouqs Co, says plants with unique variegations will continue to trend next year. “Not only can plants bring that perfect pop of green, but they can also serve as serious design elements in a space. A couple of my favorites are Ric Rac cacti (Zig Zag) and Swiss Cheese Monstera (Two To Tango).”

Faux Plants

Interior designer Kate Dawson tells me faux plants are here to stay. “They cost significantly less than live plants, and they last for years! Plus, you don't have to struggle with making sure they get the appropriate amount of light and water.”

If you’re considering faux plants but worried they might look a little fake, know that today’s quality faux plants are dead ringers for the real thing. “The only thing you need to do for maintenance is dust them...but otherwise, who would know?”

Don’t know where to start? Dawson says you can't go wrong with succulents “They come in so many sizes and they are perfect for tucking into little nooks and crannies that need a little something to balance out the area.”
