Traveling to Ghana for Afrochella? Here's Where to Go

Last year, there were reportedly 80,000 visas issued to visit the West African nation of Ghana. In 2019, as of September, there’s been 750,000 issued. Why the rise? There are a couple of reasons: One, is the Year of Return push by the tourism board; two, the global growth of Afrobeats; and three, the Afrochella and Afro Nation music festivals.

As one of the fastest-growing economies on the continent, Ghana has a lot to offer young, creative people who want to have a fun time. There are an endless amount of things to do when visiting — like walking 100-feet above ground at Kakum National Forest or learning about the history of slave trade at Elmina Castle. But outside of those important stops, there are tons of great restaurants and artistic hubs to visit.

Check out ten places we’ve gathered to visit while in Ghana for Afrochella 2019.

While in Ghana you can/should learn about the pre-existing artist community through vendors at markets who make their own woodwork and canvas paintings (support them!) — but also in more formal spaces of exhibition like Gallery 1957. Their current exhibitions are regularly updated on their website.
