Traveler discovers abandoned ‘Car Forest’ in the desert: ‘One of the coolest things I’ve seen’
The International Car Forest of the Last Church is a bizarre artistic gem hidden in a Goldfield, Nev.
Created by Chad Sorg and Mark Rippie, the pair stood vehicles on their noses and buried them in the sand. The duo started almost two decades ago and today there are over 40 graffiti-covered trucks, cars and vans, some stacked on each other, abandoned in the desert.
A driver discovered the installation by accident and took footage of the unexpected scene.
“This has got to be one of the coolest things I’ve seen traveling around,” they told Newsflare. “Cars and buses buried halfway in the dirt with lots of graffiti art. Very cool place for a photo shoot. It says enter at your own risk and to respect the art and artist. You can take photos and video, but to actually shoot professionally you must get permits.”
The video shows the front end of a school bus, with mannequin legs protruding from its windows, buried in the ground. There are upturned pickup trucks and small cars peppered around it. Each vehicle is covered in graffiti artwork from whoever passed through and left their mark. It’s truly an unbelievable sight.
The International Car Forest came to fruition in 2002. Rippie owned the 80 acres of land next to Highway 95 and enlisted the help of Sorg. The installation was intended to be a blank canvas to inspire artists to tag, paint or draw anything they wanted on the cars. Today it still remains exactly that.
