On Sunday, the New York Times reported that the Trump Administration is considering redefining gender as only that which is assigned at birth. This would erase transgender and gender non-conforming identities, making it impossible for TGNC people to have legal documentation that lines up with how they actually identify.

So the LGBTQ community and allies are coming together to make it loud and clear that we won't let that happen.

On Sunday night, hundreds of TGNC people and allies stood in the cold weather under the arch in New York's Washington Square Park in a protest organized by Voices 4 and Lambda Legal. We chanted "you can't erase us," and "trans lives matter" and activists Sara Ramirez, Indya Moore, Marquise Vilson, as well as staff from the Anti-Violence Project and Lambda Legal addressed the crowd with key action items.

Protests across the nation have spiked in reaction - including one on Monday in Washington, DC, organized by the National Center for Transgender Equality. And people have also taken to social media to share their dissent, using the hashtag #WontBeErased to make it clear that trans identities are here to stay.

But if you're unable to attend a protest or rally this week, and you want to help, here are some action items that will make an impact.

Donate directly to transgender non-profit organizations and to TGNC people on the GoFundMe pages.

  • Trans Lifeline is a trans-led hotline that offers service to and for the community.

  • The Transgender Law Center is also led by trans people, for trans people who need legal representation.

  • There's an entire thread on Twitter where you can find personal pages to donate directly to transgender and non-binary people who need help.

Vote on November 6th and encourage your friends to hit the polls with you.

Support trans-centric art and trans-owned businesses. Every time you buy a ticket for a movie or order clothes online or add something to your Netflix queue, you're voting with your patronage. Send a signal that you want to hear more LGBTQ stories in the media.

If you're in need of support, please reach out to the Trans Lifeline (877-565-8860), the Anti-Violence Project (212-714-1141) or the Trevor Project (1-866-488-7386).
