The New Trailer for ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace’ Is Ryan Murphy at His Finest

The full-length trailer for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story dropped yesterday and, well, producer Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) has done it again.

The trailer opens with a montage of clips featuring the murderer, Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss—yes, the guy who played Blaine on Glee), running from the cops, paramedics loading a stretcher into an ambulance and news footage detailing the media storm that followed Versace’s 1997 murder. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t completely captivated by Donatella Versace’s (Penélope Cruz) five seconds of airtime, but once the trailer shifts focus to Cunanan, there’s just no going back.

As Versace and his clothing empire rise to fame, Cunanan cunningly builds his case against the Italian fashion designer. The trailer goes on to detail the moments as Cunanan loses touch with reality and falls deeper into psychosis, which eventually leads to his fatal confrontation with Versace. Cunanan says in a voiceover, “This world has wasted me, and yet this world also made you, Mr. Versace, into a star. You’re not better than me. We’re the same. The only difference is that you got lucky.”

The Assassination of Gianni Versace premieres on January 17 on FX.
