Imagine you're a wealthy prince, living in L.A., partying with celebrities, married to a glamorous actress, and spending your 39th birthday in Germany presiding over a sports tournament you created to benefit wounded veterans. OK, now imagine that in that scenario, no one in your family made a public social media post wishing you a happy birthday.

What a hellish life that would be, right?

Well, while you might think such a nightmarish scenario could only exist in the imagination of an H.P. Lovecraft or a Dean Koontz, it's actually playing out right now before our eyes.

We're talking about Prince Harry, the second son of King Charles III. A few years back, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, very quietly and very privately stepped away from their royal duties to pursue a private life. You probably haven't heard about it.

Since then, things have been icy between Harry and his royal relatives, with conspicuous absences at various celebrations and a refusal on the part of the Royal Family to speak publicly about Harry, even after the publication of his bombshell memoir, Spare. And it's not like they have some sort of long-established secret process of leaking their displeasure to the press through backchannels or anything, so we have no way of really knowing how they feel.

The only thing we can do is infer things from their actions—which is why the absence of any public social posts is of particular note to those of us following the saga of the Royal Family's turmoil. There was speculation that perhaps Prince William might send his brother a private text, which, barring the kind of criminal invasion of privacy that members of the British press would undoubtedly be too ethical ever to do, we'll never know if that occurred.

But those waiting for a public reconciliation will unfortunately have to wait a bit longer.
