There’s grocery shopping, and then there’s shopping at Trader Joe’s. While the former of these tasks feels like a tedious necessity, the latter is more like a game of Supermarket Sweep where everything on the shelves and in the freezer section is a fun new snack or quick meal idea we want to try. But the real competition comes into play when Trader Joe’s releases a hot new item that people can’t seem to get enough of. That’s what’s been happening with the chain’s frozen Kimbap. It was introduced in early August, and sold out by September. But finally, some shoppers report that this viral Trader Joe’s product is finally trickling back into stores.

Kimbap, also known as gimbap, is a traditional Korean food that might seem like a Japanese maki roll at first glance, but aside from being wrapped in seaweed and filled with rice, that’s where the comparisons stop. Kimbap is usually filled with cooked ingredients, like meat, tofu, egg, or fishcake, along with cooked and pickled vegetables, which are then rolled in rice and seaweed. Sesame oil and soy sauce are the main flavoring components, and the rolls can be eaten at room temperature.

You can make kimbap at home, or pick it up at your local Korean grocery store, but Trader Joe’s Kimbap is especially convenient because it comes frozen. When you’re ready to eat, the Kimbap rolls microwave in just two minutes, then are ready to eat. Trader Joe’s Kimbap is also vegan, and at just $3.99 per package, it’s easy to see why it’s been flying out of the store at breakneck speed.

Trader Joe’s has said that the product is expected to be back in stores by the end of October, but even once it’s finally in stock, you might have a hard time getting your hands on a package. Some social media users are even pleading with Trader Joe’s to impose limits on the Kimbap, so people can’t hoard it in their freezers at home. If you’ve been wanting to try this viral Trader Joe’s Korean food, then you’ll want to start keeping an eye on the freezer aisle, so you can grab a package the next time it’s in stock.
