New year, new item at Trader Joe’s! If you’re still indulging in their holiday Italian panettone or snacking on their delicious peppermint brownies, we don’t blame you. However, you’ll definitely want to add their latest savory frozen dish to your grocery list next time you head to your local store — especially if you’re an egg-lover.

Trader Joe’s just released a tortilla Española in the frozen aisle, as shared by @trader_joes_treasure_hunt, @traderjoeslist, and others on Instagram. Originating in Spain, the Spanish omelet is a national dish conventionally composed of eggs, potatoes, and sometimes onion, served at room temperature as a tapa along with other small plates. However, contrary to its name, the recipe doesn’t include a flour or corn tortilla. The eggs, potatoes, and olive oil give it that fluffy, puck-like shape.

Trader Joe’s uses a supplier from Spain who specializes in the recipe and compares the dish to a “hearty frittata,” an egg-based Italian dish resembling quiche. Just place the frozen omelet on the stovetop for a few minutes and you’re ready to plate. Despite its rich flavor, tortilla Española has a lighter texture, making it a quick, filling, and delicious choice for breakfast. You can also serve it as a dinner party appetizer paired with your favorite wine or as a standalone meal.

“My mom was from Sevilla,” commented one user. “This was a common meal in my house. Homemade, of course. But love tortilla de papa!”

Making the dish from scratch can be a little daunting at first and requires a lot of patience, so this Trader Joe’s version is a great way to enjoy the dish before breaking out your chef’s hat and apron. It’s pretty egg-citing, if we do say so ourselves.
