Thanks to the recent “fall back” and the winter equinox that’s quickly approaching, our days are getting darker and shorter while our holiday to-do lists only get longer and more chaotic. With just days left on the holiday shopping calendar, the pressure to shop for groceries and gifts with utmost efficiency is on — and that’s where Trader Joe’s, with its masterful rollout of seasonal items, comes in.

The chain has transformed a classic and often dreaded errand into a scavenger-like experience: A greeting committee of rotational plants awaits you at the door, and you’re left to explore aisles scattered with newly released treats and decor items. (The iconic cinnamon broom and the multi-use olive wood cutting board are among The Kitchn favorites.) Like old friends, many items return by popular demand year after year, one of the most recognizable being the iconic waxed amaryllis bulbs. If you missed your chance to pick up a three-pack of amaryllis “living ornaments” from Costco this fall, you’re in luck! Trader Joe’s $7.99 bulbs are the perfect grab-and-go holiday item to share with others (ahem, as an incredibly festive hosting gift for any holiday event you’re attending), or to take home for yourself.

The bulbs come in red and gold wax coats with a small gift tag already attached. Ready to bloom as-is, they only require indirect sunlight and the occasional rotation to promote even growth. The wax acts as a self-contained vase, but bulbs can be placed in waterless containers or even painted to add a touch of personalization.

The bulbs will likely grow at least two stems over four to five weeks, with multiple flowers per stem over the following three to four weeks. The biggest blooms will grow up to 18 inches eight to nine weeks after purchase, so you’ll be enjoying these stunners through the new year. Once blooms have fully developed, they can be expected to last up to one month. After that, they can be de-waxed and composted or replanted for future blooms. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving!

But that’s not all — in addition to the waxed amaryllis bulbs, Trader Joe’s has a variety of other amaryllis flower options such as amaryllis tins ($9.99), waterless amaryllises perched onto rustic slabs of wood ($10.99), and whole potted amaryllis gardens ($16.99). Get ‘em before they’re gone!

While we saw them at Costco in November, you can also find these decorative gems at your local nursery, or get them shipped directly to your door via Amazon. For a few dollars more than Trader Joe’s option, these waxed bulbs come in other fun colors like pink, teal, and white. They’re the perfect way to add a subtle touch of hassle-free greenery to your holiday decor
