Tourist Walks Through Rome's Trevi Fountain to Their Refill Water Bottle

An ill-behaved tourist used Rome’s iconic Trevi fountain to refill her water bottle.

Video of the galling incident, which occurred late last month, recently began to circulate on social media. It shows the thirsty tourist, clad in a turquoise top and white culottes, traipsing across the iconic Italian landmark with a water bottle in hand. She leans into one of the waterfalls and proceeds to fill her jug. As she does, a security guard makes their way to the scene. The trespasser then unsteadily totters back to land, defiantly jumping from the fountain to the ground.

The security guard blows their whistle, catching the woman’s attention. They then have an exchange of words, with the guard gesturing emphatically to the fountain. The woman looks around cluelessly as passersby gawk at her. Eventually, the guard escorts the clueless water thief from the premises.

Lex Jones, the woman who captured the video, told Storyful (via Daily Mail UK) that she initially couldn’t believe her eyes. “I was just like, wow, this is crazy so I started videoing it,” she recalled. According to Jones, the unidentified tourist “kept trying to explain her side and didn't really understand why she was in trouble.”

Rome has seen more than its share of rude tourists this summer. In June, a Bristol-resident used house keys to carve his and a girlfriend’s name into the Roman Colosseum. In July, a Swedish teen did exactly the same thing. She faces a fine of up to €15,000 (about $16,300) for damaging cultural property.

There's also been plenty of poorly behaved tourists catching people's attention at U.S. national parks, with visitors picking up baby bison and even touching boiling hot springs.

It’s unclear what penalties, if any, the Trevi fountain trespasser will face. However, it serves as a warning to always pack an extra Dasani.
