Just before heading to Paris for the final stage of the 2023 Tour de France, Jonas Vingegaard and Jumbo-Visma made public that the Danish champion will be in Barcelona in a matter of weeks to race La Vuelta a España.

Vingegaard said that he will co-lead with Primož Roglič in an effort to take the GC. “I will attempt to contend for the general classification, and Primož Roglič will do the same. Undoubtedly, we will both serve as team leaders.” The co-leader strategy has been employed by the team in the past, and is not that unusual on teams with several star riders.

And Roglič will be coming into La Vuelta with fresh legs, as he just sat out the Tour de France in order to focus on the Spanish grand tour.

When is La Vuelta a España?

La Vuelta a España runs from August 26 to September 17, 2023. The race is made up of 21 stages and will cover a total distance of 3,154 kilometers. The race stages include:

  • 4 flat stages

  • 2 flat stages with high-altitude finales

  • 6 hilly stages

  • 7 mountain stages

  • 1 team trial stage and 1 individual time-trial stages

  • 2 rest days

Sound a lot like the Tour de France? That’s why Vingegaard is racing. If Jumbo-Visma wins, it will be the first time a team has taken the triple crown (Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and La Vuelta a España) in one year. So they’re doing everything they can to make sure that historic accomplishment happens.

“See you in Barcelona, in the Vuelta,” Vingegaard told Spanish sports daily Marca Sunday morning. It’s unconfirmed who else will join Vingegaard and Roglič as they look to sweep the GC, but news will likely come in the next week. Sepp Kuss is still recovering from injuries sustained in a crash during stage 20 of the Tour de France, and is yet to confirm whether he too will be heading to Spain.

Jumbo-Visma will have their work cut out, as the start list in Barcelona is already stacked with several all-stars. Defending champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal–Quick-Step) and Geraint Thomas (Ineos) are also set to race.
