Tennis-inspired style is here to stay. And now, two greats are teaming up to bring tenniscore to a new level: Tory Burch is collaborating with tennis legend Billie Jean King, in honor of the Billie Jean King Cup, which begins today in Glasgow.
"I was definitely inspired by what I saw [Billie] wearing in the 1970s," Burch tells Harper's Bazaar of the collection. "I wanted to design chic pieces with a bit of a retro sensibility." Proceeds for the collection will support the Tory Burch Foundation and the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative.
In addition, for the first time ever in a women-led sporting event, the winning team will get a winner's jacket—designed by Burch, of course, and inspired by Billie Jean King, in a shade Burch calls "Billie Blue."
"It's not just a jacket," King says in a video released by the International Tennis Federation. "It's got a lot of love and kindness and design and thought into it." The jacket, too, will have a special message from King embroidered in the lining.
"I am in awe of Billie Jean. What she means to young women is hard to describe," Burch said in a statement. "I'm thrilled for our partnership. Personally, I'm really excited about the winner's jackets. I thought about those green jackets they give men at the Masters, and I wanted to make something as iconic for world champion women athletes."
