What are the top five public-access golf courses in Oklahoma?

With the weather getting warmer in Oklahoma, now is the perfect time for golfers to start planning on where to play in the upcoming months.

From near the Texas border to the northern part of the state, Oklahoma is filled with places to get in some rounds.

Here are the top five public-access courses to go to.

1. Karsten Creek (Stillwater)

Address: 1800 Memorial Dr., Stillwater, OK 74074

The home course for Oklahoma State, Karsten Creek opened in May 1994 and was designed by Tom Fazio, and Travel & Leisure Golf magazine has ranked it as the best college course in the nation. It is named after golf club designer and businessman Karsten Solheim, the founder of Karsten Manufacturing.

2. Jimmie Austin (Norman)

Address: 4 Ransom Dr., Norman, OK 73019

Designed by famed golf course architect Perry Maxwell, who is known as the father of Oklahoma golf, Jimmie Austin opened in 1951. A renovation of the course was completed in 1996 with the financial help of OU supporters, most notably Jimmie Austin.

3. Cherokee Hills (Catoosa)

Address: 770 W Cherokee St., Catoosa, OK 74015

Cherokee Hills is an extension of hotel and casino Hard Rock Tulsa, making it a great place to not just play golf but also have some fun before and after a round of play.

4. Shangri-La (Afton)

Address: 57301 OK-125, Afton, OK 74331

Nestled on Monkey Island at Grand Lake, Shangri-La Golf Club & Resort has a 27-hole championship course along with a new 18-hole par 3-course known as the Battlefield.

5. Chickasaw Pointe (Kingston)

Address: 12428 Chickasaw Point Rd., Kingston, OK

Situation next to Lake Texoma, Chickasaw Pointe opened in 1999. Known for its scenic views, this is regarded as the best spot in southern Oklahoma.
