It’s hard to believe 2023 is coming to a close, but when you think about it, it’s been quite a year. When it comes to food, 2023 was the year of Girl Dinner and Grimace, fruit roll-ups and feta, and absolutely everything to do with cottage cheese and cowboys. There are many moments that stand out, but these are the recipes that will stick with us way beyond this year. So, without further ado, these are the top 10 recipes that went viral on TikTok (and the internet at large) in 2023. How many have you tried?

Smash Burger Taco

Starting things off with a bang, or rather a smash. Smash Burger Tacos, or Big Mac Tacos, have all the makings of a viral sensation, so it's no surprise they took TikTok by storm. The mashup of two comfort foods is familiar yet totally new, plus it's quick and easy to make, even on busy weeknights.

This recipe, developed by Allrecipes culinary producer Nicole McLaughlin, had dozens of cooks making it at home nearly as soon as it was published. "This was outstanding. Nicole said when you fry the tortilla in the hamburger grease it is a total game changer. Without a doubt it was....We will keep this one around even well past the summer," wrote community member Loves2cook.

For even more Big Mac-inspired goodness, give this casserole and these "Little Mac" Bites a try.

Lasagna Soup

TikTok creator @DannyLovesPasta saw his lasagna soup tutorial go so viral, even Grammy award-winning singer SZA was begging for the recipe. According to Google, Lasagna Soup was the second most-searched recipe of 2023 (our beloved purple pal's Grimace Shake was the top). Why? Because it takes the best parts of creamy, cheese, noodle-filled lasagna and makes it (approximately) one hundred times easier.

And while Danny's version was more like a deconstructed lasagna pasta, we've got an equally comforting recipe on site from Chef John that leans more into the "soup" part of lasagna soup, or an Instant Pot version that makes things even easier, to boot.

Chicken Cobbler

This viral TikTok chicken cobbler rounded out the top three of Google's most-searched recipes last year. It starts with a box of Red Lobster biscuit mix and is incredibly easy to put together with just six more ingredients, including store-bought shortcuts like rotisserie chicken, frozen mixed vegetables, and cream of chicken soup. If you're new to chicken cobbler, think of it like chicken pot pie meets a (savory) dump cake.

According to recipe developer Nicole McLaughlin, "Not only does it taste better than chicken pot pie, but it's way easier to make." Another Allrecipes member raves, "The entire family devoured it and asked me to make it again soon. Nailed it!"

Blended Cottage Cheese

The hottest grocery store product of 2023 was undoubtedly cottage cheese. Seriously, whoever does PR for cottage cheese deserves an award. High in protein, accessible, and versatile, cottage cheese spawned thousands of recipes on social media this year, but especially on TikTok. In fact, cottage cheese recipes were the top food-related topic on TikTok in 2023.

Blending cottage cheese was the hack that took it over the top— and remedied the sometimes off-putting texture. This cottage cheese toast puts blended cottage cheese to good use in a rich yet nutritious breakfast, but there are plenty more recipes on our site to feature the beloved dairy product. Still new to the stuff? Try these pancakes or this extra creamy mac and cheese.

Upside Down Puff Pastries

The flip seen 'round the world. That was certainly the feeling on Instagram and TikTok in the last year, when creator after creator showed off their own creative takes on the upside-down puff pastry tart. Inspired by a Tarte Tatin, these tarts went in sweet and savory directions, with some delicious (and delicious-looking) results. Try it with your favorite fruit, or cheese, or both!

Cowboy Butter

Just like Grimace, I did not have Cowboys on my predictions list for 2023 comebacks. And I'm not talking about the football team. From casseroles and stews to cookies and candy (the spicy kind), cowboys were everywhere this year, but no recipe reached the heights that Cowboy Butter did.

Cowboy Butter, a Southwestern-inspired compound butter, was also in the top 10 most-searched recipes on Google for 2023. As we watched creator after creator dunk tender pieces of steak into the dressed-up butter, we couldn't help but fall in love with the trend. And don't stop at steak—try Cowboy Butter on chicken, pork, roasted veggies, or shrimp, or spread on bread and crackers; it would be a more-than-welcome addition to any cheese or charcuterie board this holiday season.

Feta Eggs

Chili crisp fried eggs and pesto fried eggs were among the top trends of the last few years, and feta-fried eggs feel like the natural continuation of that trend. Feta eggs are one of those recipes that took social media by storm in what felt like a day. Suddenly everyone and their mother sprinkled feta into a pan and cracked an egg right into it.

That's because all it takes is 15 minutes to convert you to a Feta Egg lover—and believe us, you will be converted. This is a non-recipe recipe that is less of a fleeting trend and more of a genius trick that will stick around in our kitchens way beyond the year's end. Plus it's a great way to use up a little extra feta if you made, say, one of the many other viral feta recipes on TikTok.

Creative Cinnamon Rolls

If 2023 proved anything, it's that you can put anything in a cinnamon roll and it will turn out delicious. Sweet or savory, fruity or fiery, there are a million and one ways to make cinnamon rolls—and they don't even technically need to have cinnamon.

Our top picks for the trend are these out-of-the-box Eggnog Cinnamon Rolls, Strawberry Cinnamon Rolls, and these decadent Red Velvet Cinnamon Rolls. And psst—you can use a can of cinnamon rolls and still get in on the fun with this brilliant hack.

Rotel Tacos

Honestly, we don't know where these viral tacos originated, but we don't really care because we do know they are downright delectable. According to Allrecipes' very own Nicole McLaughlin, "It’s like your favorite dip meets the perfect bite of a taco."

Reviewer Sarah Cacciaglia writes, "I liked this recipe so much I gave it five stars. My parents liked this taco recipe too, it was better than Taco Bell’s tacos [and] I would make it again." Pro tip: don't skip the shredded iceberg lettuce on top—the cold crisp of the fresh lettuce provides the perfect contrast to the creamy, rich taco filling.

Hugo Spritz

We couldn't end this list without a drink, because 2023 deserves a proper toast to close out the year. The drink of summer is always a contentious topic, but one cocktail came out on top this year: the Hugo Spritz. While #WaterTok was all over our feeds this year, we're partial to this light and refreshing St. Germain spritz.

You can find the entire recipe over on our sister website, but here is a simplified version: combine 1/2 ounce of St-Germain (elderflower liqueur), 4 ounces chilled prosecco, and 1 ounce of soda water in a stemmed wine glass with ice. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a slice of lemon and toast to a year well spent eating and drinking!
