Tonya Harding Says She ‘Knew Something Was Up’ Before Nancy Kerrigan Was Attacked
Former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding has been back in the headlines with the release of the Margot Robbie-starring I, Tonya, and while she has largely stayed out of the press since the 1994 attack on Nancy Kerrigan, she’s getting more candid than ever about her life and the incident in a new TV special called Truth and Lies: The Tonya Harding Story.
“I knew that something was up,” she says in a new preview clip for the interview, which airs Thursday, January 11, on ABC.
Harding was never charged in the attack itself (her ex husband Jeff Gillooly and co-conspirator Shawn Eckardt planned it), but she did plead guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution of the perpetrators.
Harding has always said that she knew nothing about the attack, and while she still maintains that she was not involved, the new interview does provide some additional insight.
“I did, however, overhear them talking about stuff, [saying] ‘Maybe we should take somebody out so we can make sure she gets on the team,'” Harding clarifies after reiterating that she did not tell her husband to carry out the attack. “I go, ‘What the hell are you talking about?'”
An earlier preview of the two-hour special saw Harding open up about her troubled family history and the effect the infamous attack had on her life. While now happily remarried and the mother of a son, Harding says that she still receives negative attention from the incident, but that she’s done “enough apologizing.”
Truth and Lies: The Tonya Harding Story airs Thursday, January 11 on ABC at 9pm EST.
