Tommy John Loungewear: The Gift That Brings Fond Memories of Togetherness

Buying a gift takes special consideration. And we’ve all been on both sides of the exchange, whether it’s gone well or not so well. You know when the wrapping paper comes off whether a present is a winner. In our Gifted & Approved series, we tell the stories of those winners, the best presents our editors have either given or received. We hope they provide a little inspiration and advice as you go about your holiday shopping and gift search.

Over the past few years, I’ve been focusing my gift-giving efforts on practical items that are a little more luxurious than your everyday brand (like the Laneige lip mask or anything Oxo). Tommy John loungewear strikes that balance nicely, and so far it’s been a hit with all three people I’ve gifted it to: my sister-in-law, my husband, and my dad. Of course I got myself a set, too.

The thing about luxurious loungewear is that it’s more than just a gift, it’s an item that elicits memories of time spent together, like holidays relaxing on the couch. I can picture my sister-in-law wearing her lavender Downtime Jogger when we’re playing cards, or my dad in his Second Skin Pajama Pant and Eagles shirt watching football, or my husband and me decorating our Christmas tree in matching pants. Lounging plus family go hand in hand, and it’s nice when a gift serves as a fond reminder of those times.

It helps, too, that Tommy John makes an exceptionally good product. Many of its loungewear products are made of what the brand calls “Second Skin.” The material is ultra-soft, it doesn’t fade or pill, and it doesn’t stretch either. All of the pants lack tags — a feature I wish more brands would adopt, to be honest. My family has raved about their lounge pants so much that my husband decided to buy them for his family, too. Now we’re all just one big happy Tommy John-clad clan.

It is worth noting that the material is pretty thin, and I agree with the brand’s note that the pants are made “for bedroom to breakfast and between the sheets (not for the streets).” I would not recommend wearing them out and about.

The brand makes a variety of different styles, from sleep pants to joggers to lounge sets. I’m also a big fan of their underwear, too, which happens to make a great stocking stuffer.
