Tom Hiddleston Still Can't Escape Taylor Swift Questions

It’s 2017, and the summer of Hiddleswift is far behind us. Gone are the days of that curious pile of rocks in Rhode Island and a festive Fourth of July Taymerica celebration featuring Taylor Swift and her then-beau Tom Hiddleston (in that “I <_3 t.s.="t.s." tank="tank" top.="top." the="the" couple="couple" a="a" href="http://www.vanityfair.com/style/2016/09/taylor-swift-tom-hiddleston-breakup">split last September, but that doesn’t stop reporters from asking Hiddleston about the relationship. In an interview with The Telegraph published Monday, the actor strongly rebuffed a question about Swift.</_3>

When writer John Hiscock asked Hiddleston if he had any “regrets about the publicity and gossip the romance engendered,” and Hiddleston quickly responded:

“What should I regret, in your mind?” he asked. “I would rather not talk about this, if that's all right.”

But he continued anyway, with “a long pause and a hand on his chin” as he reflected:

“I'm just thinking about this,” he said. “Everyone is entitled to a private life, I love what I do and I dedicate myself with absolute commitment to making great art and great entertainment, and in my mind I don't conflict the two. My work is in the public sphere and I have a private life. And those two things are separate.”

Hiddleston has shared a similar opinion in the past. In an interview with his friend Benedict Cumberbatch right after Hiddleswift’s demise, Hiddleston deftly danced around the topic of the breakup, only to say this:

“There’s another weight of us being in the public eye, which is this presumption that, because your work and your promotion work is very public, your private life should be, too.”

In that particular discussion, Cumberbatch knew not to go any further. But writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner again broached the Swift subject for GQ's March issue, asking Hiddleston if the relationship, with all its publicity was, in fact, real.

“‘Taylor is an amazing woman,’ reads the prepared statement Tom Hiddleston has memorized and is now giving me at The Bull & Last, where his voice has gone low,” Brodesser-Akner wrote. “ ‘She’s generous and kind and lovely, and we had the best time.’ ‘But I didn’t ask that,’ I say. ‘I asked something else. So I wait, and he says, ‘Of course it was real.’ ”

“Prepared statement“ or not, when it comes to the subject of Hiddleswift, it seems Tom Hiddleston just can’t . . . shake it off.
