  • Tom Hanks accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 77th Golden Globe Awards last night.

  • His son, Chet—now an actor, but formerly a rapper known as Chet Haze—for some reason was speaking with a Jamaican Patois accent on the red carpet before the show.

  • It was very strange!

One of the unquestioned best parts of the 77th Golden Globe Awards (broadcast last night on NBC) was Tom Hanks receiving the ceremony's Cecil B. DeMille Award—one for lifetime achievement. Charlize Theron's introduction and Hanks' acceptance speech were truly memorable moments, and the entire Hanks family was on-hand to watch their 63-year-old patriarch in his big moment. Included in that bunch is Hanks' son Chet Hanks, also known as rapper Chet Haze, who was slightly less elegant on his father's big night, speaking for some reason on the red carpet in thick, put-on, Jamaican Patois.

Live from the red carpet, Chet shared an Instagram where someone is heard at the beginning saying "oh my god...."

"BIG UP FIMI WHOL FAMILY SOON COM AT DI AWARDS NA SEEN 🔥 🔥 🔥 CHUNE IN," he captioned his Instagram post. Haze has previously come under fire for his insistence on using the n-word, though he has since gone back on that stance—saying that was due to a combination of his drug use at the time and wanting to fit in.

While Haze was a frat rapper in the style of early Mac Miller or Asher Roth during his time at Northwestern University, he now mostly uses the name 'Chet Hanks' and goes for acting roles. He's appeared in a number of episodes of Fox's music drama Empire, along with recurring roles in comedy series Shameless, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Maron.

So while it seems like Hanks the younger has mostly left his rap career and ignorant language use in the past, something else is happening now and was happening on the red carpet last night. I...won't even attempt to caption what he says in the video; have a look for yourself below:

Appropriately, people online were confused by the video. "Why is Tom Hanks' son Chet Hanks speaking patois?" one Tweet asked. "Idk how but blame Drake," another wrote in response.

At least Mom got a kick out of it, though. "Maybe the best laugh of the night. 😂," wrote Rita Wilson, who's been married to Tom Hanks since 1988.

At least we know that the artist formerly known as Chet Haze isn't always speaking like that. In a five-minute video captioned "Chet Chats Vol. 3 - Growth," Haze (while shirtless) talks through something he probably deems super motivational.

One quote from that video? "People are always posting their wins. No one's posting their L's," he says. "That's the way of the game." Who got a W and who got an L on the red carpet last night? Who's to say, really? Who's to say.
