  • Tom Hanks’ son Chet Hanks attended the 2020 Golden Globes.

  • Ahead of the ceremony, Chet spoke in a poorly executed Jamaican accent to hype up his father’s Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance.

Welp, the Golden Globes have officially come and gone—it was a really good four hours, you guys! In case you didn’t watch the show and are trying your darndest to catch up on everything you missed, here’s a super-short summary: All your fave celebs showed up in fancy outfits (there were so many naked looks), Ricky Gervais then eviscerated them all with vicious jokes, there were multiple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston happenings and plenty of awkward moments galore! And did I mention everybody was drunk? Oh, yeah, that too.

But while the awards show left us with many head-scratching moments, perhaps the biggest, most confusing moment of them all happened WAAAY before the ceremony even started, and you can thank Tom Hanks’ son Chet Hanks for that.

On the Golden Globes red carpet, some poor soul had the misfortune of recording Chet on the way into the venue hyping up his Instagram followers for his dad’s Cecil B. DeMille acceptance speech later in the evening. And while this alone doesn’t seem strange, the fact that Chet—who is a Very White Man™—spoke in a terrible Jamaican accent certainly is.

Prepare to weep:

In case you had a hard time understanding WTF Chet was saying, he said, “Big up, big up! The whole island massive. It’s ya boy Chet coming straight from the Golden Globes. You see, my father, Tom Hanks, is presenting an award, soon forward come. Big up, tune in!” but, like, in horrible patois. And to make matters worse, he captioned the video, “BIG UP FIMI WHOL FAMILY SOON COM AT DI AWARDS NA SEEN 🔥 🔥 🔥 CHUNE IN.” I, a proud Jamaican woman, have no words.

Thankfully for Chet, there’s no Golden Globe award for the Cringiest Show Attendee, but let’s be real—he’d sweep that category with zero competition.
