Tom Hanks Revives 'SNL' Character David S. Pumpkins and Leaves Fans Howling

The actor's surprise appearance was indeed a treat.
On Oct. 29, Saturday Night Live held its annual Halloween episode, with Jack Harlow hosting and serving as the musical guest. Still, it was a surprise appearance from a fan-favorite sketch character that had fans in an uproar.
Five years after fans last saw Tom Hanks play David S. Pumpkins on screen in The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special, a half-hour animated show released in 2017, Hanks returned to the character as a cameo on the 2022 Halloween episode.
In one episode segment, three people, played by Harlow, Ego Nwodim, and Andrew Dismukes, go on a scary ride called Cell Block 666, which leads the group to different cells that feature characters from well-known horror films.
That is until they get to Pumpkins and his two skeleton friends, played by Bobby Moynihan and Mikey Day.
Hanks fully embodies the weird charm of Pumpkins once again, saying, "I'm David Pumpkins, and I'm going to scare you stupid." After the trio does their signature dance, Pumpkins asks the riders, "Any questions?"
The three people on Cell Block 666 are confused about Pumpkins, who continues to appear on the ride as it goes on.
During the episode of Saturday Night Live, you can hear the live audience absolutely loving Pumpkins' surprise appearance, and fans elsewhere had the same reaction.
Both Hanks and Moynihan appeared earlier in the episode, leading fans watching live to wonder if Pumpkins was finally returning. One fan said, "BOBBY IS BACK. WE ARE DEFINITELY GETTING A DAVID S. PUMPKINS."
Well, they were right, and people were ecstatic when he finally showed up.
One fan wrote, "David S. Pumpkins is love. David S. Pumpkins is life. #SNL."
Another argued that "david s. pumpkins is the reason for the season," and they might be right.
Rather than saying how they felt in words, one fan posted a reaction gif along with the text "seeing Mr. David S. Pumpkins in an SNL skit in 2022."
With maybe the cutest reaction to the surprise, one person shared a picture of their two nephews dressed up as Pumpkins and one of the skeletons for Halloween, writing, "My nephews will be psyched to see tonight’s return of David S Pumpkins on #snl!"
