We're right on the cusp of that glorious interstitial time between summer and fall. The kids are, finally, about to be, back at school. Afternoon baseball finally seems tolerable again. There's a glimmer of football in the heat haze rising up out of fields across the country. Tom Brady is on the cover of the September issue of Men's Health. The one challenge we seemed posed with during this time of year is just how we should actually be dressing right now. You want to keep up the laid back, comfortable vibe you've sported all summer while leaning into fall's best offerings, like easy button downs and do-anything khaki's. That's where Mr. Brady comes in again. "I like versatile clothes, stuff you can layer in different seasons like hoodies, corduroy shirts, wool sweaters," he says. "I don’t want to look back at a photo in 20 years and wonder, ‘What was I thinking?’” Follow his lead (and our rules of transitional style) to stretch your summer-vacation classics into go-to fall looks that function as pre-, post-, and every season style.

Rule No. 1

Swap out your standard oxford button-down shirt for a rugged chambray to wear with your regular office khakis.

Blue on blue is allowed, encouraged even, when they’re on two ends of the light-to-dark spectrum.

A crew-neck sweatshirt can be dressed up when it’s a slimmer fit and is in a darker shade. Fit is something Brady swears by. "I’m particular about my football uniform’s look and fit. I want it to be just right," he says. "I'm the same with clothes. I like a classic fit, nothing too tight or too baggy. When something fits perfectly, you get a great feeling.”

Opt for a military-inspired shirt (this one's got a slim zip-pocket tucked behind the breast pocket, perfect for transporting, say, tickets) that let's you get some much needed function of your clothes while still looking put together.
