Tom Brady is offering his condolences to the family of former NFL player Ryan Mallett, who died unexpectedly at the age of 35 earlier this week.

Mallett, who died of an apparent drowning off the coast of Florida on Tuesday, June 27, previously played three seasons as Brady's back-up quarterback on the New England Patriots, before moving on to the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens.

Following the reports of the former quarterback's untimely passing, Brady, 45, spoke out on social media to pay his respects to his old teammate.

"We lost a great man," he wrote in an Instagram Story on Tuesday evening, which featured a photograph of the two athletes walking arm-in-arm on the field together in Patriots practice jerseys. "Thank you for everything Ryan."

"Praying for the Mallett family and all their loved ones tonight 🙏" he added in the post.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office confirmed that it was Mallett who was involved in the tragic drowning incident on Tuesday, which took place in the Gulf of Mexico in Destin, Fla.

First responders were called to the scene at around 2 p.m., where a group of people in the water had been "struggling to make their way back to shore," according to the report.

An adult male, now identified as Mallett, "went under" the water and lifeguards said he "was not breathing when pulled out."

"Lifesaving measures were immediately undertaken but [Mallett] was pronounced deceased at the Destin Emergency Room," the Sheriff's Office stated.

Mallett, an Arkansas native, was a third-round pick in the NFL Draft back in 2011, where he began his career for the Patriots. In 2014, he was traded to the Houston Texans, though he suffered a season-ending injury just two games in. He then played six games the following season before he was traded to the Ravens.

He retired from the NFL after the 2017 season, before becoming a career coach. In 2022, he became the head football coach at his alma mater, White Hall High School.

He is survived by his girlfriend Madison Carter, who, according to a report from The New York Post, was in attendance for the Florida beach vacation during which Mallett passed away.
