Plans after plans. After his announcement that he will be retiring from football “for good,” Tom Brady’s Fox Sports contract is officially in motion. The star quarterback and Super Bowl champion was announced as the new lead analyst for Fox Sports in May 2022—a deal set in stone before he called it quits on the field.
“We are pleased to announce that immediately following his playing career, 7-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady will be joining us at @foxsports as our lead analyst,” said Lachlan Murdoch via Fox Sports’ Twitter. “Over the course of this long-term agreement, Tom will not only call our biggest NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt but will also serve as an ambassador for us, particularly with respect to client and promotional initiatives. We are delighted that Tom has committed to joining the Fox team and wish him all the best during this upcoming season.” At the time, Tom responded that he still wasn’t retiring just yet, “Excited, but a lot of unfinished business on the field with the @Buccaneers #LFG,” the quarterback quote tweeted the announcement. Lachlan said it’s “entirely up to” Tom when he decides to retire from football and join Fox, and time is definitely ticking after the football player’s latest retirement announcement.

How much is Tom Brady’s Fox Sports contract? Tom Brady signed a 10-year deal with Fox Sports for $375 million to be a lead NFL analyst on-air, according to Variety. In response to Murdoch’s tweet, the Super Bowl champ replied, “Excited, but a lot of unfinished business on the field with the @Buccaneers #LFG,” the quarterback quote tweeted the announcement. Lachlan said it’s “entirely up to” Tom when he decides to retire from football and join Fox. According to TMZ, the Fox Sports role is a deal that he’s not going to rush into starting, but one he’s excited to take on when the time is right. The gossip site reported that he won’t take the role for several months.
“They approached me after the season. And there’s a lot of history that I have with Fox,” he told Variety in July 2022 about the deal with Fox Sports. “I spoke with their executives, and I really had to evaluate if that’s what I wanted to commit to. I have a very unique perspective on football and how it should be played, and what good plays look like and what bad plays look like. I feel like I can still have a great impact on the game. I could stay in the game, doing what I love to do, talking about this incredible sport.”
Brady explained that Fox Sports approached him after he retired for the first time in February 2022. “Initially, I told them I didn’t want to do it. There was a lot of different emotions. I couldn’t make the decision from the place where I needed to be. For the first time, I was a free agent in life. It’s different than being a free agent in football when one of 31 teams can come after you. I had lots of different people say, ‘You’re free now; we’d love to have you involved in’ — different parts of football, broadcasting, business and finance,” he said. Brady also confirmed to Variety at the time that Fox Sports executives were OK when he unretired from football in March 2022 and that he would start his on-air career “when I’m done playing.” He added, “I’m very close to the end.” Brady confirmed that ESPN also tried to approach him with a deal. “Yeah, at different times. There were a lot of different opportunities I was approached with,” he said.
As for what kind of broadcaster wanted to be, Brady told Variety, “I’m there to support. I’m there to inform. I have a great knowledge of the game. And I also have very high expectations of what players and coaches should do in the field. I’ll have no problem being critical of things that I disagree with, and I’ll have no problem praising things that are exceptional.”
Fox Corporation executive chairman and CEO Lachlan Murdoch confirmed Brady’s contract with Fox Sports in a statement in May 2022. “Over the course of this long-term agreement, Tom will not only call our biggest NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, but will also serve as an ambassador for us, particularly with respect to client and promotional initiatives,” the statement read. “We are delighted that Tom has committed to joining the Fox team and wish him all the best during this upcoming season.”
In an interview on his “Let’s Go!” podcast before he announced his second retirement in January 2023, Brady confirmed his commitment to Fox Sports. “There’s so much to learn, there’s so much to teach, you know, it’s ever evolving. Believe me, as much as you think I’m willing to teach people, I’m really looking to learn. I’m really looking to learn from all the people that I get to talk to. I get an opportunity to be in a job in the future where I get to travel around and learn from all the other people that I’ve looked up to and admired and different organizations and different people. So it’s exciting for me too. I feel like the opportunity to do that is something that I’m really looking forward to whenever that time comes,” he said.
On February 1, 2023, Brady announced on social media that he will be retiring from football “for good,” but admitted it’s not the first time his fans have heard him say the word. Tearfully, he said: “I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning I figured I’d just press record, and let you guys know first,” Tom filmed his retirement speech on a beach. “It won’t be long-winded, you only get one super-emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year, so. I…really thank you, guys, so much to every single one of you, for supporting me, my family, my friends, teammates, my competitors. I could go on forever. There’s too many. Thank you guys for allowing me to live my absolute dream. I wouldn’t change a thing. Love you all.”
After the Buccaneer’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys on January 15, 2023, which eliminated them from the playoffs, many teams speculated where and whether the champion quarterback would play next season. The 2022 season was one of the worst for the Super Bowl champ-led team, however, Tom still threw for an impressive 4,694 yards and 25 touchdowns.
“There’s so much to learn, there’s so much to teach, you know, it’s ever-evolving. Believe me, as much as you think I’m willing to teach people, I’m really looking to learn. It’s not known whether or not Tom Brady will make his official debut as an analyst for Fox News during the 2023 Super Bowl. Fox Sports did not reveal what plans it will have for Super Bowl Sunday in its broadcast booth, but for now, the Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen duo remain in place for the February 12 game.

Why did Tom Brady retire? Tom Brady initially announced his first retirement from the NFL after over two decades in February 2022 after the Buccaneers lost to the Los Angeles Rams during the playoffs prior to the Super Bowl.
He shared a photo of himself on the field, along with the following statement: “I have always believed the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition—if a 100 percent competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game,” Brady’s statement began. “There is a physical, mental, and emotional challenge EVERY single day that has allowed me to maximize my highest potential. And I have tried my very best these past 22 years. There are no shortcuts to success on the field or in life.”
He continued, “This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore. I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention. I’ve done a lot of reflecting the past week and have asked myself difficult questions. And I am so proud of what we have achieved. My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100 percent of me, but right now, it’s best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes.”
Tom retracted his retirement in a tweet in March 2022 to play for the 2022 season. “These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Unfinished business LFG.”
