Tom Blyth is having quite the year, capturing the heart of the internet as Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and now it has been announced he will star in A Farewell to Arms.

Michael Winterbottom, whose previous work includes the BAFTA-winning In This World, is set to adapt Ernest Hemingway's 1929 novel.

Based on the author's experience as an ambulance driver for the Italian Army, the story follows the affair between Lieutenant Frederic Henry and an English nurse named Catherine Barkley.

This is not the first time an adaptation has hit the big screen as films were also made in 1932 and 1957.

The '32 film by Frank Borzage won two Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Sound, Recording.

Charles Vidor and John Huston's '57 adaptation also landed an Oscar nomination for Vittorio De Sica's supporting role, Major Alessandro Rinaldi.

The director said, "I want our film to be true to Hemingway's approach – immediate, raw and natural". He also praised Blyth, saying, "We have found the perfect person to be Frederic Henry".

Blyth returned the compliment, saying, "Michael has adapted the book perfectly, with a script that captures all of the author's unique nuance and precision".

The film also has the support of the Hemingway Estate.

Brendan Hemingway, Patrick Hemingway Adams, and Angela Hemingway Charles said, "Given the chaotic state of the world, it's hard to think of a better moment to reintroduce his seminal story of love and the devastating effects of war. We deeply appreciate the passion and depth of understanding exhibited by Winterbottom and his team. They are surely the right people to breathe new life into Hemingway's vision, and at a time when we, tragically, need it most".
