What is the ‘Together We Are FNAF’ scene that’s all over TikTok? Is it real?

After months of anticipation, the popular video game-turned-horror movie Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) opened in theaters on Oct. 27. For weeks leading up to the movie’s premier, fans of the video game expressed concern that the film adaptation wouldn’t do the original video game justice.

One TikTok user, Grant Greely (@grantgreely), seemed particularly worried after seeing an image from the movie’s trailer, which appears to show several killer animatronics teaming up with the story’s human protagonist.

As a big fan of the original game, Greely knew that these characters would never calmly speak to each other face-to-face, let alone team up with one another on screen. So, in a now-viral TikTok, he vented his frustration with other fans.

“Are they all having a full blown conversation right here? Each one of them?” Greely asked while showing the image from the trailer. “I don’t ever remember that happening.”

“There’s no way that they should be having any conversation,” he added. “These three should be killing that guy. Not talking it out.”

Greely said that if he sees Five Nights at Freddy’s and these characters seem chummy at any point in the movie, he’s walking right out of the theater.

“There is no way they should have any conversation,” Greely insisted. “These three are supposed to be killing this guy, not talking it out! That takes away from what Five Nights at Freddy’s is.”

In the comments, many fans of the game agreed and began to write in made-up phrases the characters might be saying to each other in the scene.

“Alright guys, we got this,” wrote @the_golffather.

“So… new guy, you got a plan?” added @urielhelpme.

In the end, however, it was the imaginary catchphrase “Together, we are FNAF” — which appears to have first been written by the user @breeentuh — that people seemed to latch on to the most.

Before long, the made-up tagline found its way into many other related memes on TikTok and even became its own hashtag with more than 8 million views.

In many memes, users have photoshopped the made-up dialogue over pretend reaction shots to the movie, leading to confusion among fans who aren’t sure if it’s real.

Some users have even created fake “leaked footage” clips of the film to continue the joke.

In at least one of these fake clips, the evil animatronic characters appear to be happily dancing with one another.

In other TikToks, people have made up different dialogue to trick those who have not seen the movie into really believing there’s a line saying, “Together we are FNAF.”

Others have imagined “what if” scenarios that they swear they better not see.

It’s led to so much confusion that people have even started Reddit threads asking for the truth about the scene.

In one recent post, u/One_Draw1341 wrote, “Together we are fnaf scene has to be fake.”

Fortunately for fans of the video game, it is all part of a big online inside joke. Other fans of the game who saw the movie chimed in on Reddit to explain that, ultimately, the scene makes sense once you watch the movie.

“don’t worry it’s not real,” answered the user u/p0isinivy. “I won’t spoil it for you but that leaked clip makes sense if you watch the movie.”
