Turns out fashion can be art. Just ask Todd Snyder.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently invited the American menswear designer to create a capsule collection inspired by some of the most famous works on its walls. Styles in the 12-piece collection range from chore coats to sweaters, and reimagine masterpieces by artists including Édouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and Vincent van Gogh.

Snyder chose the paintings he would adapt into sportswear after spending several Wednesdays (when The Met is closed to the public) alone with the museum’s prized collection. In a statement, the brand indicated that Snyder had a tough time choosing which periods and artists mine from The Met’s catalog, which spans over 5,000 years of art.

Snyder landed on a small selection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists whose works feel compatible with today’s era of menswear styling. “There was something about the colors, the brushstrokes of Van Gogh, the palette of Degas, and the composition of Manet that made them feel incredibly modern, incredibly relevant,” Snyder says in a statement.

A lightweight duck-down parka features the bold brushstrokes of Van Gogh’s Olive Trees (1889), while a puffer vest includes a detail from the same orchard scene. The Dutch artist’s Wheat Field with Cypresses (1889) is alternatively expressed on a chore coat “because the chore [coat] is based on a French worker’s garment and the kind of thing you could imagine him wearing,” Snyder says. The digitally-printed piece with a boxy fit for layering costs $598. (The collection ranges in price from $228 to $1,500.)

There are a few other popular works on Snyder’s designs for The Met, including Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat (1887) on a crewneck sweater; his Irises (1890) on a hoodie; and an earthy brown shirt that features a trio of Degas’s paintings from between 1866 and 1898. Todd Snyder x The Met Van Gogh scarves with rolled edges round out the capsule. Both accessories feature printed adaptations of the artist’s self-portrait and cypress works.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with the iconic menswear designer Todd Snyder,” says Josh Ramm, head of Global Licensing and Partnerships at The Met, in a statement. “Each piece in the collection is a celebration of a Met masterpiece that brings art to life through wearable designs for the contemporary customer.”

You can shop the collection from November 30 at 10 a.m., exclusively at the Todd Snyder website and its retail locations in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. They’ll also be available at The Met’s gift shop.
