  • Today show star Carson Daly revealed this week that he cautioned Gwen Stefani about dating Blake Shelton.

  • The No Doubt singer and country star first got together in 2015 following their respective divorces.

  • In October, Blake and Gwen announced their engagement.

From day one, Carson Daly was (jokingly) against Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani getting together.

On Thursday's Today show, Carson reminisced about the early days of the country star and No Doubt singer's relationship. As The Voice host said in jest while talking with Gwen, he voted "no" when sparks first began to fly between the two.

"Five years ago, when you started to date Blake, you’ll remember this, we went back to your house, your old house in LA, and I sat you and Blake down in the kitchen," Carson recalled. "And I said, 'You guys, pump the brakes. This is not good. This is not going to work.' And I looked at Gwen, and I said, 'You’re much, much too good for this guy. You’re smart. You’re intelligent. You’re one of my oldest friends. And then there’s Blake.'"

Not surprisingly, Carson's commentary made co-anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie chuckle. Gwen also laughed off Carson's story about her and Blake's budding relationship.

"What don’t I love about Blake, and what don’t we all love about Blake? I feel like it’s very mutual in the room right now, Hoda," Gwen said. “He’s just such a good guy. He’s one of the most generous human beings and down-to-earth. It almost sounds generic, but it’s just so true."

Clearly, Gwen and Blake made the right call ignoring Carson's light-hearted caution. The two Voice coaches first got together in 2015 following their respective divorces — Blake from Miranda Lambert and Gwen from Gavin Rossdale. Over the past few years, they've collaborated on multiple songs, including their most recent hit "Happy Anywhere." Then, last October, Blake and Gwen announced their engagement on social media.

Since then, the two have casually dropped hints here and there about what their future wedding could be like. As of last month, however, Gwen told Ryan Seacrest that the two were going to "see what happens in the next few months" with the coronavirus pandemic before making set plans.

Sorry, Carson, but we're so glad Blake and Gwen didn't listen to you on this one.
