Dylan Dreyer is often vocal about her adventures with husband Brian Fishera and their three sons, Calvin, Oliver and Rusty. Apart from sharing many childhood milestones, she opened up about a health scare she experienced with one of her kids.

In a recent segment on the Today show, the broadcast journalist disclosed that Calvin was diagnosed with celiac disease. As she explained during the taping, he frequently suffered from stomach pains and ear aches, which led Dylan and Brian to rush him to the emergency room. With the help of different doctors and blood tests, the family learned the root of Calvin's health issues in March.

"Calvin had all these symptoms I didn't realize were related," she said on the NBC morning show. "Once we got the bloodwork back that he tested positive, they had to do an endoscopy. They saw all the damage was there."

For those wondering what celiac disease is, the Celiac Disease Foundation describes it as a genetic disease that prompts inflammation in your small intestine after eating gluten. Materials published by the foundation suggests celiac disease affects an estimated 1-in-100 people internationally; the condition may be diagnosed at any age as symptoms could present later in life, and may also prompt other health concerns if the disease is left untreated.

When Today show fans learned what happened to Calvin, they immediately rallied around Dylan with well wishes for her son.

"I’m glad Calvin is feeling better. 😄," one person wrote on YouTube. "Sweet child and I am sorry that he suffered for so long before being diagnosed. I am glad that he is healing and healthy. Awareness is important. 💚❤️," a different follower added on Instagram. "You’re such a trooper Cal!!!❤️,'" another agreed.

With results confirmed, the Earth Odyssey host decided to switch up her family's lifestyle to accommodate Calvin's diagnosis. She told Today.com that everyone began eating a gluten-free diet, and she even bought new kitchen tools to ensure that no traces of gluten were left for him to ingest.

Despite the diagnosis, Dylan's son isn't letting this stop him from enjoying food. The two often film the Today show segment "Cooking With Cal," where the mother-son duo experiment with gluten-free products that he can enjoy. What's more, Dylan makes him special breads and foods that he gives feedback on.

What's more, the Today show co-host expressed her gratitude for folks who have been supportive. "Wow…I feel like I’ve become part of a whole new community today," she wrote on Instagram on May 24. "Ever since Calvin’s celiac diagnosis, I’ve quietly been doing my research and as a family we’ve been figuring it all out. But today opened my eyes to how many of you have gone through the same thing."

She continued: "Thank you for your kind words, your encouragement, your recommendations. I’ve been reading through them all but haven’t replied yet. Just know I see you and I thank you so much!"
