On Friday, Krystal Keith wrote a heartbreaking tribute to her late father Toby Keith on Instagram. The 39-year-old said she was “shattered” by his tragic death after a battle with stomach cancer. The legendary country music singer was just 62 years old and also shared kids Shelley and Stelen with wife Tricia Lucus.

In her moving post, Krystal acknowledged the “outpouring of love” and all the commemorative segments that had aired since he passed last Monday. The grieving daughter said she hopes to be able to watch and enjoy them “once she’s able.” And though she may not have watched any yet, there was one special honor that she couldn’t ignore.

The University of Oklahoma has been honoring Toby since his death, posting a photo of a lone guitar in the basketball stands with the caption, “Forever a Sooner.” They then celebrated his life during the men’s basketball game against Oklahoma State on Saturday. The president of the University of Oklahoma even penned a touching statement mourning the “proud son of Oklahoma” and acknowledging all he did for the school and the community.

Krystal reshared the guitar photo and said she loved that he was being honored by Sooner Nation. She said the “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” singer started selling sodas in the stadium as a tween so he could see the games live. She said her family would travel to bowl games and championships and that they — like any dedicated fans — planned weddings, vacations, and big life events around team schedules.

What Did This Mean For The Keith Kids?

“He was also clear about where he was willing to spend his money when we head off to college,” Krystal said.

“When my sister was choosing a college and wanted to be a veterinarian, she said, ‘OK State has one of the best programs for that’ and he said ‘Well, I guess you don’t get to be the best.'”

And that’s that. Best? Who cares? It sounds like it was Sooner or bust for Toby. No way was the “Red Solo Cup” singer going to let Shelley go to a rival school.

“When I was choosing,” Krystal continued, “he told me, ‘You can go anywhere in the world you want to go, as long as it’s in Norman, OK and has division 1 football,'” she said. *Wink wink*

“This made me laugh lol,” one follower in the same boat said. “Dad told me I could go anywhere I wanted as long as I paid for it, unless it was OU♥️🤍”

As for Stelen, Krystal said he did a “short stint” out of state with the help of two scholarships, but quickly made his way back to Norman: “My dad was happy to forego scholarships in lieu of paying for a Sooner education.”

Talk about commitment. Krystal said he “bled crimson,” and these stories are clear proof.

“He was an ‘all in’ kind of guy,” one follower said.

“Love this little glimpse into your private life. Makes me love your Dad even more,” another wrote.

“Your dad’s love of OU was obvious,” another commented on the beloved post. “Thank you for sharing those stories. Most of all thank you for sharing him with the world. ♥️”

These celebrity dads have the sweetest bonds with their daughters.
