When it comes to footwear, it used to be you had to forfeit comfort for beauty. Thankfully, designers are finally marrying the two, so you no longer have to walk around in boring “comfort shoes” when you need to look good and be on your feet all day.

What to look for? New York City podiatrist Dr. Emily Splichal says, “If you’re someone who is standing all day, you should look for a slight heel, which seems counterintuitive, yet it offloads the plantar fascia and achilles tendon — very important for foot health. Standing is actually really hard on the body, so having the slight lift offloads those areas that get stressed from prolonged standing.”

Splichal also advises looking for shoes with built-in cushions, especially when you’re on hard surfaces like marble and concrete, because they act as shock absorbers which will help with extra impact, otherwise you could get plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis or just plain stinging and foot fatigue, because your foot is working harder than it should. Built-in arch supports are always good— especially if you have flat feet, which get tired more easily. And it’s best to go for forgiving fabrics like elastic, perforation and cotton, versus stiff or vegan leather.

We’ve rounded up our favorite shoe styles to help you find yours: All of these pairs offer major comfort while packing a big style punch. Win win!
