Tips For Sunscreen From Jentri Quinn Makeup + Skin

Jentri Quinn of Jentri Quinn Makeup + Skin, a licensed esthetician, spoke with Studio 512 about what to buy…and how to apply…when it comes to sunscreen!

Is sunscreen necessary for everyone?

“Yes! Approximately 90% of skin aging is caused by sun exposure and sun can cause damage to anyone’s skin!”

What’s the safest, most effective sunscreen?

“Because sunscreen is considered a drug, it goes through a lot of rigorous testing. So whatever sunscreen you’ll actually wear on a regular basis is the one you should use to make sure your skin is properly protected and prevent signs of premature aging.”

How do we apply sunscreen properly, and how often should we reapply it?

“Sunscreen is always the last step in your skincare routine. Apply it 15 minutes before you leave the house so it has a chance to heat up with your skin and coat your skin cells evenly.  If you’re going to be in the water or sweating, reapply it every two hours.”

Is water resistant sunscreen really waterproof?

“Sunscreen can’t handle a water balloon fight so even if it’s water resistant, it’s a good practice to reapply every couple of hours when you’re swimming, sweating, or both.”

What SPF number should we be looking for?

“The higher the number the more protection it gives, but SPF 30 is strong enough to play outside most days. You’ll also want to see ‘broad spectrum’ on the label, because that means the sunscreen will block both UVA and UVB rays (both of which can harm your skin).”

Bonus Tips & Product Recommendations Based on Your Skin Type:

  • “The sun (even the heat alone!) can cause hyperpigmentation, so wear a UV visor or hat when possible and carry a portable fan to stay cool. Big sunglasses are a great extra way to protect your eyes!

  • Here are some sunscreen recommendations for different needs:

    • For Acne-Prone Skin: Try a water-based sunscreen like this one from Nivea. It’s lightweight and won’t clog your pores.

    • For Busy Bees: A lotion-based sunscreen like this one from Elta MD is perfect if you want an all in one moisturizer and sunscreen. This Elta MD sunscreen is ideal for oily and/or sensitive skin types and conditions such as Rosacea.

    • For Smoother Looking Skin: A primer-based sunscreen like this one from Murad helps make your skin feel and look silky smooth before you put on makeup.”
