Tips for keeping disease-carrying ticks away

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — If the sunshine holds, it might be a good weekend for a hike. But be aware, you may find some unwelcome guests coming home with you.

Erie County Parks Supervising Park Ranger Chuck Bartlett joined us Thursday with some tips on how to keep ticks away while you’re out.

Ticks, which feed on blood, can carry dangerous diseases, including Lyme disease. They live close to the ground and can attach to unsuspecting hikers or really, anyone moving through the grass.

Bartlett encourages people to take preventative measures, like using tick repellent and sealing off your skin. One of the ways he encourages this is tucking your pants into your boots.

Showering after hiking helps, too. Hear more of what Bartlett shared with us in the video above.
