Timothée Chalamet Wore Sweatpants and Chucks to the Met Gala—and He Looked Great

The Met Gala, the annual fashion party and fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, is back in full swing after a year hiatus. Co-hosting this year’s soiree—the theme being “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”—is Timothée Chalamet, the Academy Award-nominated heartthrob and bona fide fashion enthusiast in his own right. And to honor the spirit of the night, he wore a pair of white Chuck Taylor All-Star high-tops, the OG sneaker that every guy worth their salt should own.
It’s not the first time that a star has rocked sneakers at the Met Gala (Serena Williams famously wore yellow kicks from Nike with a billowy gown), nor will it be the last. But in the context of the theme, Chalamet’s choice in shoes was spot on. Introduced as "Non-Skids" in 1917, the silhouette of the Chuck Taylor has a century-long history and a claim to fame as the first modern basketball sneaker. It also nodded to the past year, when dressing for comfort was king.
“[It’s] a stupidly big honor,” Chalamet told broadcast host Keke Palmer. “[I] try to be respectful of the two years we just had.”
Driving this point all the way home was his sweatpants. Yes, the man wore sweatpants to an event that typically piles on the pomp and pageantry. Granted, they were by Rick Owens. And you know what? They looked pretty damn good. If anything, it channeled another prince, this one even more animated: Aladdin. The way those sweats just dropped in the crotch almost looked like harem pants. And combined with his super fitted double-breasted satin blazer by Haider Ackermann and bling by Cartier, all I want to do now genuflect and show some respect.
