Timid Pug Puppy Slowly Comes Out of His Shell Thanks to the Kindness of Rescuers

Every shelter dog's story is worth sharing--no matter how unexciting or common it may be. Whether they were surrendered to the shelter or arrived as a stray, every rescue dog deserves a chance to heal and be adopted, just like Jax the tiny pug puppy.

This itty bitty baby was found abandoned in a box at only six weeks old on Sunday, February 25, and he was immediately transported to Los Angeles's HIT Living Foundation for a veterinary assessment. Even though he suffered from an eye injury that left him half-blind and in pain, he started to show his rescuers his precious personality after coming into their care. It's the sweetest thing!

Watching him feel a little better every day could put a smile on any animal lover's face, though I'm happy to report that this little boy's future is especially bright.

OMG! My heart is hurting for this little baby, but I'm so relieved he was found and brought to safety at this LA animal rescue. It may have been a difficult decision for his previous owner to give him up for his own safety (considering that his eye injury was likely from a dog bite), though I'm not the only one who wishes he had been surrendered to a shelter instead of abandoned. Jax was lucky he was found and brought to such a great place!

This 6-week-old puppy went to a foster home where he got plenty of time to rest and recoup. After all--he'd been through so much! His experienced foster mom must know a lot about the 3-3-3 rule and helping rescue dogs transition into a home environment because Jax was a whole different pup after just a few days.

And after a few weeks, he was brought back to the vet for his next step of healing--having his damaged eye removed so he could live a pain-free life.

Good boy, Jax! He's such a brave little pug puppy, especially after a scary surgery at such a young age. He's resting back at his foster home, now, but it won't be long until he's up and at 'em like any other pup!

Why Give a Young Puppy a Big Surgery?

While it may be a bit sad for a dog so young to lose an eye, the benefits of Jax's procedure, called an enucleation, far outweigh the costs. He still retains most of his field of vision, and he's now living a pain-free life! His first vet visit came to the conclusion that his eye would likely not heal from the injury, so there was no reason to prolong his discomfort. They did wait a few weeks--perhaps until he was a little older--but now this puppy has a long, healthy life ahead of him.
