It’s Time to Familiarize Yourself with the Ultimate Transitional Outerwear: The Shacket

We love a good hybrid fashion item. You know, the type that manages to bridge two seasons and is surprisingly easy to wear. There is perhaps no item that better encapsulates this idea than the shacket.

Wait, what’s a shacket?

For the uninitiated, the shacket is indeed a combination shirt and jacket—that can be worn as both. And, apologies to the denim jacket, but it’s currently our favorite summer-to-fall outerwear piece.

Most shackets have the silhouette and details of a traditional button-down shirt (one or two chest pockets, buttons along the front and a classic collar), but are made of thicker material more akin to an actual jacket. Usually done up in flannel, cotton canvas or denim, they sometimes incorporate military details like epaulettes on the shoulders. If there are also pockets on the lower half, you may see it referred to as a chore jacket.

Got it. Now, what’s the best way to rock a shacket this fall?

Take inspiration from ‘90s grunge and wear one open over a floral midi dress and trendy combat boots. Or go for a more tailored approach and button one up over a pair of skinny jeans and pointy-toe ankle boots. Even better if you add a waist-cinching belt. Shackets have long been lauded as a spectacular layering piece, but they’ve recently become even more popular, at least according to Lyst. Those using the global shopping platform to update their fall wardrobes have been searching for denim, corduroy and oversize shackets since early September, with those numbers only continuing to rise as we head into October.

So, we decided to jumpstart the search for you and found 15 easy shackets that will make the transition from summer to fall just a bit more chic.

Buy it ($145)

2. Topshop Fray Hem Denim Jacket

Go for a denim-on-denim look and wear this shacket open over a pair of blue-wash jeans and a plain white tee. Or, jazz things up with a silky slip dress and delicate earrings, instead.

Buy it ($75)

Available in sizes 0 to 14

3. Line & Dot Harrison Jacket

FYI, that belt is removeable, should you prefer to wear this top open or loose. You can even swap it out for a thin leather or contrasting wool version as well. Ah yes, the world is your cozy chic oyster.

Buy it ($154)

Available in sizes XS to L

4. BP. Plaid Flannel Shirt Jacket

We’re obsessed with the hidden side pockets on this forest green shacket, which are much better for stowing frost-nipped fingers than the typical button-front pockets.

Buy it ($69)

5. Madewell Hollyhurst Oversized Chore Jacket

Take a styling cue from the model above and close just the top one or two buttons, leaving the rest to swing open and reveal the adorable graphic tee or colorful knit you have on underneath.

6. Levi’s Floral-Embroidered Cotton Shacket

The small flower detail on the arm is all you need to give this masculine silhouette a more feminine vibe.

7. Missguided Plus-Size Lilac Brushed Plaid Shacket

Classic red, green and black-and-white checks will always have a place in our hearts…but this unexpected lavender plaid is definitely in the lead to be our new go-to fall pattern.

Available in sizes 12 to 22

8. Lab 101 Stone-Washed Shacket

If you’re really into the oversize look, why not hop on over to the men’s section for a greater selection? This simple denim number looks much more like an old-school shacket than some of the more tailored versions on this list, but that’s precisely why we love it so.

Buy it ($188)

Available in sizes S to XL

9. Blank NYC Flannel Shacket

Rather than match up the lines on the oversize front pockets and the actual jacket, this Blank NYC stunner takes them for a spin and places them on an angle—something we never knew would make such a difference.

Buy it ($98)

Available in sizes XS to L

10. Everlane The Chore Jacket

This easy cotton classic comes in black, white and caramel brown, but there’s also a bright cobalt hue that’s sure to make you stand out from the pack.

Buy it ($78)

Available in sizes XXS to XXL

11. Boohoo Plus Check Shacket

This isn’t your typical stark black-and-white plaid, but instead incorporates a slew of neutral hues like gray, beige and cream, making it the ultimate goes-with-everything piece.

Buy it ($60; $36)

Available in sizes 12 to 24

12. Tomorrow Malcom Belted Jacket

While lots of shackets come with a coordinating tie belt, we’re digging this structured denim version, which could easily be worn over a dress or coat or even slipped into the belt loops on a pair of pants. The long jacket’s pretty cute, too.

Buy it ($310)

Available in sizes 4 to 14

13. Per Una Checked Relaxed Shacket

We love the contrasting oversize buttons along the front and at the top of the lower pockets to add some punch to the otherwise minimalist silhouette.

Buy it ($125)

Available in sizes 2 to 20

14. H&M+ Denim Shacket

Not quite a chambray button-down, not really a classic denim jacket, this shacket is thin enough to be comfortably tucked into skirts or trousers, but thick enough that it will keep you warm on a crisp fall stroll. Plus, it will layer really nicely under your heavy winter coats, come December.

Buy it ($35)

Available in sizes L to 4XL

15. Universal Thread Chore Shacket

Who says corduroy needs to look heavy or retro? This gray-beige number is lighter and trendier than the thick brown fabric of the ‘70s, and frankly, we just can’t get enough of it.

Buy it ($35)

Available in sizes XS to 4X
