Tim Tebow has undoubtedly improved during his time as a minor league baseball player, especially at the plate, but his glovework could still use some work.

Tebow patrols left field for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets. The Rumble Ponies visited the Portland Sea Dogs Monday night. As an homage to their big league club, the Boston Red Sox, and Fenway Park’s infamous Green Monster, Portland’s 37-foot tall left field wall is known as the Maine Monster.

Like many outfielders before him, it gave Tebow some trouble.

The 2007 Heisman winner tracked a deep fly ball off the bat of Portland first baseman Josh Ockimey. Tebow drifted toward the wall and by the time be got his bearings straight, the ball corralled off the Monster and was headed right toward his noggin.

Ouch.

To make matters worse, the ball deflected off Tebow and toward the foul line, allowing Ockimey to stroll into third base with an RBI triple.

Tebow’s misplay allowed the Sea Dogs to cut Binghamton’s lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Portland added another run later in the inning to tie things up and tacked on three more in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead en route to a 5-3 win.

But Tebow helped his team more than he hurt it. Batting in the No. 7 spot, Tebow went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. He also stole a base in the loss.

That 3-for-4 performance increased Tebow’s batting average to .266 on the season to go with five home runs and 32 RBIs. His hot bat in June — a .301 average with a .762 OPS — landed him a spot in the Eastern League All-Star Game later this month.
