Tim Tebow Opens Up About Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters Engagement: “I Had to Lie, Like a Lot”
It’s Tim Tebow is taken time. The prolific, former college football player has been opening up about his engagement to former Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters this week and how he planned so meticulously for the magic moment last month.
“We had so many surprises, but the problem is I had to lie, like a lot,” he said on Good Morning America on Wednesday, February 13. “I didn’t really like it or feel comfortable, but I had to. And it was worth it.” (Tebow, a professed Christian whose faith has been at the forefront of his athletic career, has been rather vocal about his religion since he was catapulted into he spotlight as the Florida Gators quarterback in 2007.)
“[I] started part of the planning from months ahead of time,” Tebow affirmed to Entertainment Tonight on Monday. “The problem is, once I felt like she started to get a clue, then I would, like, make up something else.”
Lucky for Tebow, he was ultimately able to pull off a mega surprise for the former beauty queen. “I had absolutely no idea that it was gonna be that day,” Nel-Peters, a former Miss South Africa, told ET at the same event. “I mean, I definitely knew how I felt about him and how we felt about each other, so that wasn’t a surprise, but I had no idea the proposal was gonna be that day.”

Tebow added Wednesday on GMA, “She was totally surprised and I had her favorite singer come out after I proposed. [He sang] our favorite song called ‘The Wedding Song’ by Matthew Mole. I flew her family over from South Africa and her friends.”
In the midst of wedding planning, the two are now getting acclimated to referring to each other as “fiancé.”
“I totally messed up right after we got engaged and I introduced her as my girlfriend,” Tebow told GMA. “But it was OK, because then she did it a couple of days later. So I didn’t feel as bad.”
