On Clouds are summer’s hottest sneakers and weigh as little as six ounces.

Recently, I was walking around my hometown of New York City — where I get just as much travel-style inspo as I do in any European city I visit — and there was one particular sneaker, with a curious-looking sole, that I kept spotting everywhere. So I popped into an athletics store, and there it was sitting pretty on the shelf: On Cloud 5 Running Shoes, which I’m dubbing the official comfort shoes of 2023.

It’s not just my fellow New Yorkers (and me) whose interest is piqued by the On Cloud 5. The ubiquitous little shoe is also the apple of many a TikToker’s eye, particularly nurses and Disney moms who do their fair share of standing and walking and swear by their pairs. I did my own digging and found out that the Cloud 5 line includes a bunch of popular styles, but the new On Cloud 5 Coast sneakers in particular are actually marketed by the On company as “the ultimate packable summer travel shoes” thanks to a few key features.

One of them is that curious-looking sole. The perforated outer sole of the On Cloud 5 Coast sneakers is made of “Zero-Gravity foam” that gives your foot the kind of bouncy landing that might remind you of, I don’t know, walking on a cloud? These shoes have cushioning and shock-absorbency for days, which is a good thing because this TikToker wore hers for two full days walking around Salem and Boston. And another TikTok mom walked more than “50 Disney miles” in her On Clouds — and she gives the impression she’d walk 50 more.

The On Cloud 5 Coast shoes are the brand’s lightest shoe yet, coming in at just shy of six ounces. They’re made almost completely of recycled materials and contain all of the On Cloud 5 collection’s signature cushioning, but because they have a collapsible upper and a kick-down heel, they’re engineered for folding up and sticking in a tote bag — or, say, a nurse’s work bag. “Catch me running to bed alarms [at] lightning speed with how light these are,” one nurse on TikTok said. “I am obsessed.”

Another On Cloud line that theme park parents love is the Cloudnova, a slightly chunkier line of sneakers by the popular brand, but with the same pillowy cushioning, outer sole materials, and a similar lightweight construction: this one is a hair over half a pound. The On Cloudnova’s been around a little longer, so it’s tried and true. One Disney mom called her pair “the most important item” she brought with her: “super cute, comfy park shoes.”

“These shoes were life-savers with all the walking around Disney, Legoland, and Seaworld,” someone else wrote on TikTok, declaring themselves “obsessed” with the On Cloudnovas. Also squarely a travel sneaker (just not foldable for packing), the Cloudnova is made of about 40 percent recycled material with a thicker, more buoyant sole, but the same adaptive CloudTec cushioning technology. And On is always releasing fun new colors for Cloudnovas, but the white-on-white version is a fan favorite and never goes out of style.

Oh, and nurses? Yep, they love Cloudnovas, too. They love the compliments they receive, they love the way these sneakers look, but most of all, they love that Cloudnovas are “12-hour shift-approved.” These lace-up On Cloud shoes have that same breathable upper as well.

Nordstrom has the best prices we’ve seen on On Cloud sneakers, and a fine assortment of colors in stock. And now that the secret’s out on the hottest shoe of summer, it’s time to get on the On train and level up your travel style in these ultimate urban adventure shoes. A camp field trip? A day at Disney? An all-day walking tour of your new favorite city? No sweat when you’ve got your new all-day sneakers.
