TikTokers react to AI-generated Barbies from Latin America: ‘The belizean one looks like beyoncé’

Buzzfeed recently released a list of AI-generated Barbie dolls, with each one being inspired by a different country in the world — and the reactions are flowing in from TikTokers.

Social media users have several criticisms of the Barbie outcomes, citing that the AI models used stereotypes to create the Barbie’s looks. Of the Barbies under criticism

Of the Barbies that were created, the ones from Latin America have received plenty of attention for how they look.

TikToker Tony Vara (@varatony) posted a compilation of the Barbies, and went through the inaccuracies in the dolls — specifically with the hair color choices.

“Apparently that’s what AI thinks Panamanians look like,” Vara said. “Blonde Panamanians do exist, there’s just not a lot of them.”

Other people felt similar to Vara in that the Panamanian Barbie wasn’t represented correctly.

“Panama mentioned pero at what cost,” replied @khariyalena. “They never do us justice i swear.

Throughout the video, Vara continued to point out that many of the Barbie dolls sported blonde hair and light brown skin, regardless of what a majority of the population actually looks like.

“At this point, you realize this AI is scared of giving anyone black-colored hair,” he said.

Even people in the comments began to notice the archetype the AI model was using, trying to pinpoint its inspiration.

“The belizean one looks like beyoncé,” replied @singularitysintro.

This experiment, which was released just a few weeks before the Barbie movie release, is just another example of people using AI to generate a perfect doll look. Right now, the Barbie filter — created by @godspeed_391 — has over 3.9 million users trying to turn themselves into Barbies.

The response to the trending TikTok filter has been much better than Buzzfeed’s article.

People were also upset about other countries outside of Latin America that were subjected to stereotypes.

Buzzfeed has taken down the article, but still has one up showcasing Barbie doll houses for each country created by AI.

As screenshots of the article circulate social media, users continue to let their thoughts be known on the AI-generated Barbies.
