TikToker shares ‘major red flag’ that employees should watch for with their manager: ‘You deserve better’

A TikToker is sharing the “major red flag” that indicates your manager may not have your best interests at heart.

The insight comes courtesy of a user named @corporateamericaburnout. The TikToker describes herself as an “ex-corporate girlie sharing what I’ve learned about burnout and finding joy.”

Her page is dedicated to advice about corporate America — a topic that’s gotten plenty of attention on TikTok lately. For months, users have taken to the app with tips and candid confessions about their work.

In one clip, a former HR worker shared the one question he always asks at the end of a job interview. In another, a teacher sparked a conversation about salaries after sharing how little a master’s degree would increase her pay.

The video from @corporateamericaburnout, meanwhile shared something she claimed people should be aware of when interacting with their manager.

“If your manager cancels your one-on-ones often, that’s a major red flag,” she said in the clip.

Most employees meet with their managers regularly, and many companies even have policies outlining how often the meetings should take place.

In her video, @corporateamericaburnout explained that she isn’t referring to occasional cancellations, which are often unavoidable. Instead, she warned that employees should watch out for bosses who frequently fail to meet with them.

“In my opinion, the No. 1 job of a manager is to remove roadblocks to make you do your job more easily and efficiently,” she said. “If they’re not doing that, then they’re just a bad manager.”

On many teams, these one-to-ones may be the best time for an employee to vent or share issues disrupting their workflow. That’s why, @corporateamericaburnout said, these meetings should be one of the core functions of a manager’s job.

“If your manager isn’t even doing the basics of their job,” she said, “then they’re definitely not gonna help you grow in your career.”

Part of the video’s purpose was to encourage employees to improve their situation if they do have a bad manager.

“You deserve better,” @corporateamericaburnout captioned her post.

The concept seemed to stick, as the video earned plenty of praise from commenters.

“I agree,” one user wrote. “Some managers are so lazy.”

“Omg mine did constantly and i didn’t have an annual review for 3 years,” another added.
