TikToker is absolutely mind-blown that pilots have windows that can open on planes

Sabrina Johnson (@sabrinaleej) is a 22-year-old Colombian airline and helicopter pilot providing TikTok followers with some free education about airplanes, pilot life and what really happens when you’re flying through the sky in a metal tube.

And one of her recent videos has the TikTok world flabbergasted because it depicts Johnson opening and closing her very own pilot window.

The video —which has racked up over 5.1 million views so far — shows Johnson operating windows in the cockpit of the plane. The windows appear to be manually operated with a crank as they slide open and shut.

They also come with their own pop-up shade, which makes sense when you consider the glare a pilot must get when flying directly into the sun.

Johnson answered a few questions that she (rightfully) assumed her followers would have about the “secret” pilot windows:

  • No, pilots never open the windows when the airplane is in flight.

  • The windows can only be opened if the plane is flying less than 184 miles per hour.

  • The cruising altitude of a plane would cause so much pressure force on the outside of the window that it would be impossible to open it anyways.

Why do airplanes have cockpit windows?

Johnson explained that the cockpit windows are there to give pilots the opportunity for some fresh air or as a means to communicate with the ground crew when they are safely still on the earth.

The windows can also be used by maintenance and as a way to help keep the plane from overheating when parked. According to Scandinavian Traveler, the windows can also serve as an exit for the pilot or pilots in the event of an emergency.

The outlet also notes that not all airplanes come outfitted with pilot windows. Some larger aircraft, like the Boeing 787 and Airbus 350, for instance, have emergency hatches instead of cockpit windows.

“Stay flying,” Johnson added at the end of her video with a thumbs-up.

What you don’t know about airplanes

The comment section on Johnson’s video was also chock-full of its own fun facts and tidbits that people may not know about airplanes.

For instance, she shared that:

  • Pilots have their own separate air-conditioning units from the rest of the plane.

  • Airplanes have window wipers.

  • If she could order through her pilot window at a drive-through, she would order a McDouble.

“The more you know,” Johnson wrote.
