TikTok Teens Have Made Another Decree: Skinny Jeans Are Out

It brings me no pleasure to report that mere months after banishing side-parted hair, Gen Z has come for millennials' beloved skinny jeans. Does their wrath know no end?

According to Glow Up University (not an accredited academic institution), Gen Z “has spoken” and skinny jeans are over; we're all supposed to wear straight-leg and boot-cut jeans now. So throw every pair of skinny jeans out of your closet now and start shopping, fellow olds, or the Zoomers will come for you.

I'm kidding, obviously. Wear whatever jeans you want. Skinny jeans! Boot-cut! Dark-wash! Distressed (which, thank God, Gen Z thinks are still cool)! I, for one, don't have the time or budget to redo my pants wardrobe. I paid good money for my skintight skinny jeans, and I'm going to wear them, damn it!

Why Gen Z is targeting skinny jeans is a mystery—but the social media debate rages on. TikTok is their domain, so millennials fearfully clutching your favorite pair of Zara jeans, tread lightly as you swipe. You'll probably find more allies on Twitter, where millennials and Gen X'ers have made their position clear: Hands off our skinny jeans.

“No offense but you can pry skinny jeans from my cold, dead hands .. i don't care if this makes me a ‘millennial’ .. i will die on this hill,” one person tweeted.

“Me rolling into the bars wearing skinny jeans when all of this is over,” another person wrote, alongside the iconic “How do you do, fellow kids?” GIF.

Skinny jeans—especially on men—are absolutely emblematic of a specific era when everyone wore a purple American Apparel hoodie to listen to Fun and sip Four Loko. That era has passed, and while I don't think I ever never need to drink Four Loko (or listen to Fun) again, skinny jeans? That's one relic from 2011 I'd like to keep forever, thank you. Let me live, Gen Z!
