TikTok is Obsessed With Blanket Walls—But What Do Designers Think?

If fall is considered "sweater weather," then winter is all about throw blankets. Whether you're watching your favorite holiday movies on repeat on or enjoying a sumptuous glass of cabernet, there's something about the plummeting temperatures and minimal sunlight that makes you want to snuggle up with plush layers of wool, cashmere, or cotton. But, what happens when you're done with your throw blanket for the day? Where do they go? (Sure, draping them over a couch or folding them in a storage basket are options, but are those really the only choices?)

Now, TikTok's Kaitlyn Mackenzee Corbin has shared a well-appointed alternative with the world: The blanket wall. The content creator sidestepped tradition by installing a wall-mounted coat rack and using that to hang her blankets. "This blanket wall is my new favorite spot in my home," she wrote in the caption of her now-viral TikTok. "It's so practical and also makes the room feel so much cozier." Plus, she points out, it saves her the trouble of folding blankets!

Although this trick has certain won TikTok over—with many followers calling it "genius," "outstanding," and "so much better" than the age-old blanket ladder—we couldn't help but wonder what designers think about the budding trend. So, we asked. And the answer is...they're torn. Some pros, such as Sara Malek Barney of BANDD/DESIGN, see this phenomenon as interior design destiny. "After a few years of cuddling up with bouclé, it’s no surprise the super cozy blanket wall is a trend," she points out. "A unique hanging solution will allow the space to feel like a work of art." In other words, a good use of texture can make any house feel like a home—so why not bring all those plush materials to your walls?

But, like any other nook and cranny, this is one home hack that needs to be treated with care. Otherwise, Houston designer Mary Patton cautions, the blanket wall can be "tricky." She points out, "There is a fine line between cozy and sloppy, and you do not want your living room to look like a locker room." But that doesn't mean she's ruled the trend out completely. Instead, says Patton, "I would find really pretty, interesting blankets that could be conversation pieces, and find a unique way to hang them, rather than just hooks you would use for bathroom towels."

Strong point! After all, come summer, you may not want heavy blankets close at hand. When arranging up your blanket wall, look for a rack with thoughtful design details so your setup looks good with or without throws hanging from it. Of course, there's more to a blanket wall than a cute rack. The blanket choices matter, too. According to Los-Angeles-based designer and TV host Breegan Jane, intentional draping and the use of soft, supple textures can create plenty of visual interest.

"I think the key to nailing the trend is taking advantage of blankets in neutral colors," she shares. "Creams, tans and browns could make for a beautiful ombré of colors that won’t easily clash with existent decor when the blankets are not in use."
