Between starring in shows like The Afterparty and films like Girls Trip, and cracking jokes for audiences far and wide, comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish is known for her signature humor and jam-packed schedule. But while the household name is a pro at making the world smile, she’s also no stranger to hardship: specifically, fertility troubles.

She knows what it’s like to lose several pregnancies: “Well, I’m going to be honest with you,” Haddish said to a nurse who asked about her state after a miscarriage, per a recent interview in The Washington Post. “This would be my eighth one. I’ve got a uterus shaped like a heart. It just won’t keep anything in.” Haddish has also reportedly experienced severe bleeding and pain since her teenage years, so things became clearer for her when an ob-gyn alerted her that she most likely has endometriosis.

But while Haddish has also experienced trauma in other parts of her life—including having an abusive mother, which landed her (and her siblings) in the foster care system, and eventually calling her car home—she touched on the breakdown of her beloved romance with rapper and actor Common in the same interview. In fact, she called it “the healthiest, the funnest relationship I’ve ever had,” adding, “It’s where I felt safest out of all the relationships I’ve ever had.”

He reportedly ended things with her on the phone, and “it wasn't mutual,” she told The Washington Post. But Haddish still appears to be a romantic at heart, even if things feel bittersweet at the moment. “I’m a pretty positive person, and I’m here to have an experience,” she told the publication. “I would love to have a partner to experience it with. But also, I guess I’ve been alone for so long. And so used to being abandoned, I expect it. Which is sad, right?”
