All the Tiaras Worn at Queen Elizabeth's Coronation

With King Charles III's coronation right around the corner (mark your calendars: it's scheduled for Saturday, May 6!), there has been much speculation about who's slated to attend and who's wearing which jewels. Buckingham Palace already confirmed Queen Consort Camilla will be wearing Queen Mary's Crown instead of the Queen Mother's highly-controversial Koh-i-Noor Coronation Crown, while Kate Middleton's headpiece choice is still up in the air (if she's even wearing anything at all!).

As we wait to find out more details about the upcoming historic event, we're looking back at King Charles's mother's coronation and the many tiaras that were worn then. Keep in mind: Roughly 8,000 guests were invited to the late monarch's 1953 coronation, so narrowing down all the exact toppers is no easy task. Fortunately, we were able to identify a handful of the iconic pieces that made their appearance for the Queen's big day. Below, see all tiaras that were worn to Queen Elizabeth's coronation.

Cartier Halo Tiara

Princess Margaret attended her older sister's coronation wearing the Cartier Halo Tiara with a coronet. The headpiece dates back to 1936 when it was crafted by the French fashion house. It was initially owned by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, but it was given to Queen Elizabeth II on her 18th birthday.

Margaret went on to wear the piece numerous times before marrying Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960. The Halo Tiara has also been worn by Princess Anne, and most recently, Kate Middleton at her 2011 wedding to Prince William.

The Crown of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother

While technically not a tiara, The Queen Mother (here, with a very adorable and bored then-Prince Charles) famously donned the same headpiece she wore to her husband King George VI's 1937's coronation to her daughter's—only for the 1953 event, she just wore the circlet part.

The piece features 2,800 diamonds, including a large diamond gifted to Queen Victoria by the Sultan of Turkey in 1856 and the colossal 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond, which has a complicated and controversial history. Since India gained its independence from the UK in 1947, the Indian government has been fighting for the return of the gem, with the British rejecting their claims of ownership. The controversy surrounding the jewel is likely what contributed to Camilla's decision not to go with it for her husband's upcoming coronation.

Queen Mary's Honeysuckle Tiara

At the time of Queen Elizabeth's coronation, Princess Alice was the Duchess of Gloucester. She was the wife of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, who was the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. (Her son is Prince Richard, the current Duke of Gloucester).

She wore Queen Mary's Honeysuckle Tiara for the big affair. Queen Mary commissioned House of Garrard to commission the piece in 1914 using diamonds from her dismantled County of Surrey tiara. Princess Alice, later on, gave the headpiece to her daughter-in-law, Birgitte, the current Duchess of Gloucester, who continues to wear it to this day.

Diamond and Pearl Tiara

Also in attendance was Marina, the Duchess of Kent (right)—the wife of Prince George, Duke of Kent, who was the fourth son of King George V and Queen Mary. According to the Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor blog, she wore a pearl and diamond tiara of her own. (She was a Greek Princess by birth.) Her 16-year-old daughter, Princess Alexandra (left), just wore a coronet to the occasion.

Princess Mary's Diamond Scroll Tiara

Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood was the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, the sister of kings Edward VIII and George VI, and the aunt of Queen Elizabeth. She attended her niece's coronation wearing the Diamond Scroll Tiara.

The piece, which features a massive center sapphire with 14 surrounding diamonds, was a wedding present from her mother. She wore it on many important occasions throughout her lifetime, including for her brother George IV's 1937 coronation.

Empress Joséphine's Emerald Tiara

Princess Märtha of Sweden (flanked by the Duchess of Kent and Princess Margaret) was also there. She opted for an emerald tiara, previously owned by Empress Joséphine, the first wife of Napoléon Bonaparte. It was made by the French jewelry Bapst and features geometric emeralds in a Neo-classical diamond design. Today, it's a favorite of Queen Sonja of Norway, Princess Märtha's grandaughter-in-law.
