It made a statement during New York Fashion Week.

2023 has been the year of the Mary Jane, and I’m not mad. The functional-meets-fashionable style has become a cross-generational staple, with everyone from Kaia Gerber to Katie Holmes wearing the baby doll-esque shoe. Though the silhouette has often leaned quite feminine — for many of us, it’s a nostalgic look we grew up loving thanks to characters from Madeline and Eloise at the Plaza — this fall has shown that it’s more than just cutesy.

Just last week Tracee Ellis Ross gave it an edgy spin, and thanks to New York Fashion Week, it looks like we’re getting yet another take on the year’s “It” shoe. Because if Tory Burch’s runway show made one thing clear, it’s that the Mary Jane isn’t going anywhere — it just might look a little different.

Of all the gorgeous pieces to walk down the designer’s runway, it was the slew of T-strap Mary Janes that had me most excited. The throwback style, which has recently been worn by Taylor Swift, features a chunky sole and belted strap, bridging the dainty Mary Jane style with the sophistication of an Oxford; it’s what I’m deeming campus chic. And after now seeing it on both celebrities and the runway, I’m confident saying that it’ll be the next must-have version of 2023’s hottest shoe. So allow me to put you onto the look — as well as 10 styles you can grab today — before it blows up.

If you’re wanting to try the look for less, Kassie’s lug-sole Mary Janes from Amazon are the perfect option. These feature a small heel and are crafted out of a faux leather that’s available in both standard and high-shine finishes. And according to shoppers, you won’t miss that they’re not real-deal leather, with one writing that despite their affordable price-point, they “wore in beautifully.” They added that the style is “cute and comfortable,” making them perfect for work.

On the other hand, Dr. Martens Mary Janes are a must if you’re willing to spend a little more. This style leans a little punk with its chunky platform, double straps, and contrast stitching (I’m fully prepared to copy this Bella Hadid look and pair mine with tube socks). And though Dr. Martens’ version might be on the pricier side, shoppers say they’re “worth every penny.” “They are crafted with high-quality materials, and clear attention to detail makes this pair a true head-turner, regardless if [it’s] paired with a skirt, slacks, jeans, or shorts,” wrote one customer. Plus,  despite Dr. Martens being known to have a notorious break in period, customers say that these were “surprisingly comfortable right away” thanks to the cushion-y interior. “The padded footbed is everything,” another shopper raved.

G.H. Bass offers a low-heeled, sleeker alternative to the T-strap style. This pair is slimmer, with a thin, soft leather exterior, and is available in three classic colors: black, brown, and burgundy. According to Bass’ shoppers, they feel so good you “[won’t] want to take them off.” “[They’re] very comfy and elevate every outfit,” wrote a customer who said they’re “obsessed.” And per another, this style is “classy with a touch of modern.”
