A 'Threatening Note' Found on an American Airlines Flight Temporarily Stopped All Air Traffic at Atlanta Airport| Travel + Leisure

Air traffic was temporarily put on hold on Saturday morning after "a threatening note" was found on an American Airlines flight at Atlanta Airport.

"Shortly before 7am, prior to departure from the gate, a threatening note was found aboard an American Airlines flight bound for DFW," the Atlanta Airport tweeted. "The passengers were disembarked and re-screened at the gate, and APD is on scene to conduct a security sweep of the plane."

The Atlanta Police Department also confirmed on social media that they responded to the incident which occurred at "a gate in the T Concourse."

As a precaution the airport issued the flight hold, known as a "ground stop," which stops or slows down the flow of air traffic by stopping flights from taking off.

A ground stop can last any amount of time but considering that Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the “world’s busiest airport,” even the smallest delays can have larger ripple effects. Luckily, an American Airlines spokesperson told CNN, there were no major travel delays at the airport during the ground stop and no emergency landings were needed.

The Atlanta Police Department later tweeted that the airport was given the "all clear" for takeoff.

"Officers swept the plane," the police department said. "The 'all clear' has been given. No threat found and no arrests made."

An American Airlines spokesperson told CNN that the note “was a non-credible threat. But out of an abundance of caution, law enforcement searched."

The contents of the note had not been shared.

The ground stop was lifted at around 8:45 a.m. that morning.

According to local television station WSB-TV, a spokesperson for American Airlines said they were “working with any impacted customers to arrange flights to get them where they need to be as soon as they possibly can get them there.”
